1 Killed In Houston Motorcycle Crash

Motorcycle5

Vehicles need to be careful when on the roadway. While it’s often said that other motorists are the ones who tend to cause motorcycle accidents, sometimes the motorcycle rider is the one at fault.

Sadly, one person was killed in a recent motorcycle crash in Houston. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of September 23 at North Braeswood Boulevard and 610 West Loop.

A motorcycle rear-ended another vehicle at the intersection for unknown reasons. The Houston Police Department responded to the crash.

Video showed the motorcycle tipped over and in pieces. It was not explicitly stated who was killed in the crash, but given the condition of the motorcycle, the bike rider is the likely victim.

The intersection was closed for some time while crews cleaned up the debris from the accident. However, motorists can still use the West Loop.

Risky Riding by Motorcyclists

Not all motorcycle riders ride safely. In fact, many of them like to test their motorcycle’s limits and engage in reckless behavior. Speeding is a major cause of accidents. Many riders have small, powerful bikes that encourage high-risk behavior. Younger riders are more likely to speed and be involved in fatal crashes.

Some other risky behaviors include the following:

  • Alcohol use. Riding a motorcycle while intoxicated is not only illegal, but dangerous. Alcohol decreases judgment and decreases riding ability, making accidents more likely to occur.
  • Not wearing a helmet. In Texas, only those under the age of 21 are required by law to wear a helmet. Those who are over the age of 21 and have successfully completed the motorcycle education course do not have to wear a helmet. Still, it is a good idea to do so. It protects your head and increases your risk of survival in a crash.
  • Lack of training. Getting on a motorcycle without adequate training is asking for trouble. Motorcycles can be quite powerful and they have limitations. They cannot be operated in the same manner as passenger vehicles. It’s important to take formal training so you can operate one safely.
  • Distracted driving. In this case, the motorcycle rear-ended the other vehicle. This typically does not happen. Riders need to stay focused on the road in front of them. They cannot be distracted by texting or objects not on the road in front of them. They need to allow for sufficient space to slow down and avoid tailgating.
  • Driving in bad weather. Ice, rain, and snow can be treacherous for a motorcycle. Even a small amount of rain on the road can cause you to slide. Stay out of bad weather if possible.
