Why You Should Avoid Drunk Driving

DrunkDriver

Motorists know that driving while intoxicated is illegal, but they still do it anyway. They drive after having several drinks, even though their judgment has been altered. They hit someone, causing serious injuries or even death.

Even if a person doesn’t get into a car accident, they can still get a DUI and face serious penalties. Here’s a look at why people drink and drive and why they should avoid doing so.

Why Do People Drink and Drive?

Here are some reasons why people drink and drive:

  • Altered state of mind and perception. They drank so much alcohol that they don’t feel drunk nor are they able to judge their own sobriety.
  • They feel relaxed and confident. Alcohol can make a person feel braver in some ways, so a drunk person may feel overly confident in their ability to drive safely.
  • They’re embarrassed. Nobody wants to admit they had too much to drink and need a ride home. They would rather face the risk of driving while intoxicated.
  • They don’t feel like they drank that much. They think they only had one or two drinks, so they can’t possibly be intoxicated.
  • They feel safe. Many people drive drunk all the time and they haven’t gotten caught yet, so why would they this time?

Disadvantages of Drinking and Driving

There are no benefits to driving while intoxicated—only disadvantages. Here are some of them:

  • You could get into an accident. Drunk driving impairs judgment, which means you won’t be able to drive as well. You won’t be able to react in time, causing a crash.
  • You could injure or kill someone. Thousands of people are injured or killed by drunk driving every year. Do you really want to live with the fact that your decision to drive killed someone?
  • You could pay hefty fines. A DUI is not cheap. There is the cost of the ticket, plus court fees, fines, and fees to get your driver’s license back. When all is said and done, you could be out several thousand dollars.
  • You could go to jail. A DUI will likely send you to prison at least for a day or two. If you injure or kill someone, expect to spend many years in prison. Is that how you want to spend your days?
  • You may lose your job. DUIs are taken seriously by many employers. Government agencies will fire employees who get DUIs. Those who drive for a living will also lose their jobs. Public figures such as teachers, doctors, and lawyers may also see their employment terminated.
