Pursuit Ends In Fatal Motorcycle Crash

Many motorcycle riders like to speed. While it’s fun to go fast, you also need to make sure you are following the laws. If you are going above the speed limit, you’re likely to get pulled over by police. And when a police vehicle turns on its sirens and follows you, you need to pull over as soon as possible. Otherwise, a police chase may ensue.

This is what recently happened in Magnolia. A speeding motorcycle caught the attention of a police officer. When the police officer turned on the emergency lights to get the motorcycle to pull over, the rider sped off, getting into a crash and killing himself.

The fatal accident occurred on the evening of July 5 in Magnolia. The police pursuit began at Hardin Store and Anderson roads after a Montgomery County Precinct 5 constable deputy saw a Kawasaki motorcycle going 20 miles per hour over the speed limit. The police officer tried to pull over the motorcycle, but the rider accelerated and sped off. The rider reached speeds up to 130 miles per hour.

As the motorcyclist approached FM 2978, he turned and accelerated. The motorcycle approached Research Forest Drive and hit a passenger car pulling out onto FM 2978. The two vehicles collided head-on, causing the motorcyclist to be ejected. The motorcycle was going around 100 miles per hour at the time.

The motorcycle crossed FM 2978, went across a grassy shoulder, and finally came to a stop in the parking lot of a business. Constable deputies initiated CPR on the man, but he died at the scene. The rider has not been identified, but he was known to be 26 years old. The man was taken to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for an autopsy.

Police Pursuits and Crashes

Police pursuits tend to be controversial, as they involve high speeds, which puts other drivers at risk. When crashes occur at high speeds, they can cause fatalities, as seen in this case. Approximately 300 people are killed in the United States every year due to crashes caused by police pursuits. Unfortunately, approximately 100 of these facilities are innocent people who were not being pursued by police at the time of the crash.  Pursuit crashes often occur on local roads at night. These crashes often result in rollovers.

Fleeing drivers often meet certain demographics. They tend to be young men under the influence of drugs or alcohol, with many having previous DUI convictions. Many do not have a valid driver’s license and are likely to have previous motor vehicle convictions.
