Car Accident Leads To Road Rage, Fatality
A car accident can lead to many effects. It can cause property damage, injuries, and even road rage.
Unfortunately, this was recently the case in Houston. A crash between two vehicles near a gas station led to a shooting death of an innocent man. The fatal incident happened just after midnight on April 7 on Hiram Clarke Road.
A Toyota had the right of way when a man and woman got into a Lexus and ran a stop sign near Highway 90. The two vehicles collided. A 46-year-old man exited the Lexus and shot five times into the Toyota.
The man then got back into the Lexus and sped off. The driver of the Toyota, a 33-year-old man, died at the scene from gunshot wounds.
Surveillance video helped identify the man as the suspect. Members of the Houston Police Department took the man into custody. He was arrested, with bond set at $1 million.
This was not the man’s first brush with the law. The man was released from prison in 2019 after being convicted of another murder. The crime involved a fatal stabbing at a bar in 2010. However, the man was ultimately found not guilty.
What is Road Rage?
Road rage refers to rude and aggressive behavior by motorists. It is often done to release frustration or intimidate other drivers.
Most of the time, road rage involves verbal insults, yelling, and name calling. There may also be acts such as cutting off other drivers, flipping off another driver, inappropriate honking, swerving, tailgating, and brake checking. Sometimes there are threats and these threats may turn physical. Road rage often results in injuries, with fatalities occurring in just under 7% of incidents.
More than 1,000 incidents of road rage happen every year. Anyone can exhibit road rage, but the perpetrators tend to be young men in their 30s. Interestingly, drivers who customize their cars with stickers are more prone to road rage.
Anyone who makes a mistake while driving can be a target of road rage. However, driving instructors and learner drivers are the most common victims. Many people are affected by their experiences while learning to drive. In fact, 8% of learner drivers have abandoned learning to drive due to excessive road rage.
In the United States, road rage is not typically charged as a criminal act. However, a driver may be cited for reckless driving, speeding, or some other charge based on their actions.
