You may even want to consider an alternate route if the conditions will be better.

Leave Extra Room

You definitely want to avoid tailgating in these situations. Leave more room than usual, especially if you are traveling in rain, snow or ice. If you have to brake, it will take you longer to slow down and you don’t want to cause a rear-end crash.

Make Sure Your Vehicle is in Working Order 

Check your vehicle before you go out in inclement weather. Make sure your wiper blades are not broken. Your headlights should be clean, as dirty ones can make it harder to see. Your tires and brakes should also be checked. Consider replacing them in the winter, when you’ll need them to be in tiptop shape so you can stay on the road.

Wear a Seatbelt

If you do get in a wreck, you’re more likely to survive if you’re wearing a seatbelt. Not only is it the law, but it’s the safe thing to do. Make sure everyone in your vehicle is wearing one. Kids should be secure in their car seats.

Pull Over if Necessary

If the snow is getting too heavy, the fog is getting worse or the rain is coming down in buckets and you can’t see too far in front of you, it may be a good idea to pull over. Don’t risk trying to make it through huge puddles or slide through ice to get your destination. You won’t get there on time, but it’s much better to pull over and wait it out rather than get in an accident and possibly get injured.
