Drunk Driver Charged With Murder After Fatal Crash
Many Texans drive while intoxicated, despite the fact that it is not only illegal but dangerous. It can even be deadly, which was sadly the case when a child died after a drunk driving accident in Houston.
The fatal accident happened on the afternoon of October 9 on Highway 59 at Chimney Rock. A Honda was weaving in and out of lanes of southbound Highway 59. Moments later, the driver hit a semi truck and kept on going. The driver then hit a Mercedes and a box truck.
When the Honda hit the box truck, that was when a 5-year-old girl was ejected from the Honda. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died. It is unknown if she was wearing a seat belt at the time.
Houston police rushed to the scene and found a 2-year-old and 4-year-old also inside the Honda. They were injured and taken to the hospital, but are expected to survive. The driver of the Honda, an unidentified man, was allegedly driving drunk at the time. He has been arrested and charged with murder. It is unknown what his relationship is to the children.
Consequences of Drunk Driving
Drunk driving is very dangerous—not only to the driver, but everyone else on the roadway, including other motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. All too often, drunk drivers end up causing serious injuries or death to others, but don’t do much damage to themselves.
Alcohol consumption causes a sedative effect that can cause a lack of judgment, which makes it hard to drive safely. Slower reaction times make accidents more likely to occur. A drunk driver cannot react to hazards in time and may not slow down in time to avoid an accident. Also, an intoxicated driver may not follow traffic signs and signals, causing T-bone or head-on crashes.
Drunk driving is a crime that can lead to license suspension, hefty fines, and even jail time. Drunk drivers may have their vehicle impounded and could be ordered to enroll in a treatment program.
Drunk driving can also cause serious injuries. These injuries may include lacerations, broken bones, and neck and back injuries. In severe cases, driving while intoxicated can lead to disfigurement, brain damage, paralysis, and even death.
When a drunk driver injures or kills someone, there are emotional consequences to bear. The driver has to live with the fact that their actions harmed another person.
