How Inexperience Contributes to Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclist3

Riding a motorcycle is much different than driving a car. With a motorcycle, you are out in the open with ultimate freedom. Riding a motorcycle connects you with your surroundings and all of your senses in a way that driving a car just can’t match.

However, many people don’t seem to understand that riding a motorcycle is also much more dangerous than driving a car. This is especially true when you’re a new rider.

New riders are more likely to be involved in crashes than drivers with years of experience behind a wheel. However, motorcyclists are unlikely to walk away from a first-time accident unscathed or with only bumps and bruises. Even low-speed motorcycle accidents can cause life-threatening injuries.

Ideally, all motorcycle riders should spend a lot of time training before they get on the road, but this is not always the case. In fact, shockingly though data has indicated that nearly 30% of all motorcycle fatalities involve riders without a license.

Getting experience is key. Here are some reasons why inexperience leads to crashes.

Slower Reaction Times

Although many of the principles of riding a motorcycle are the same as riding a bicycle, the speed, weight, and transmission of motorcycles can take many weeks or months to get used to.

Because riders are focused on shifting gears, keeping their weight balanced, and maintaining a steady speed, they can’t react as quickly to hazards in front of them such as drivers pulling out or slamming on their brakes. When riders react even a second too late, they can crash.

Lack of Control

There are many different types of motorcycles on the market and each one has unique characteristics. Riders must be able to control them to be as safe as possible. However, new riders often have difficulty maintaining full control over their motorcycles. Inexperienced riders are more likely to turn their bikes over when taking sharp turns or to drop them while riding on uneven surfaces at slow speeds. While studying motorcycle safety information can help to some degree, the best way for riders to improve is to gain more experience.

Lack of Understanding of Dangers

New riders are less likely to understand how many dangers there are on the roadway. Motorcyclists must watch for hazards that the average motorist does not have to worry about, such as wet leaves, oil slicks, loose gravel, potholes, and fallen tree limbs. New riders aren’t always able to recognize these serious risk factors when they ride.

Inexperience is a huge factor in motorcycle crashes. Riding a motorcycle is much different from driving a car, but many people don’t seem to realize that, and it often comes with negative consequences.
