Man Gets Legs Amputated After Fiery Houston Crash

Closer,Look,At,A,Car,On,Fire.

In an instant, your whole world can change. A sudden car crash can leave a once healthy person injured, on life support, unconscious, with brain damage, without their limbs. This can be especially devastating for a young adult who has their whole life in front of them and has big dreams.

Sadly, this is the situation that a young man from Deer Park is currently facing. The 21-year-old was injured in a car accident in Houston on the evening of February 12. The car caught fire and the man, who was in the process of joining the U.S. Army, had to have both legs amputated as a result.

The man was delivering food when he collided with another vehicle on Spencer Highway, near El Paso Street. The driver was an unidentified woman. The man’s vehicle caught fire and he was unresponsive. Fortunately, as many as six Good Samaritans stopped to help. One man used a knife to cut the man’s seat belt, while others picked up the car, busted out the windows, and carried the man out to safety. Fortunately, one of the men was an aspiring firefighter and was able to act quickly to save the man’s life.

The man’s legs were on fire. His pants and shoes were burnt off. The man was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital. He is still there in critical condition.

Both of the man’s legs were burnt all the way up to the thighs. They could not be saved and had to be amputated. The man also has a bruised brain, fractured pelvis, broken nose, and ruptured artery. He is not aware, as he has been unconscious since the accident.

The man had just received his GED and had plans to enlist in the U.S. Army, which was his dream. His physical was scheduled for February 15, but he was in the hospital unconscious at that time. It is unlikely that he will be able to join the Army now, as amputees generally do not qualify to be enlisted.

On a positive note, the man’s mother says he is a fighter. He is showing small signs of improvement in the ICU. However, having her son in the ICU has taken an emotional and financial toll on the family. His medical costs have already exceeded $1 million.

The impact of a car accident can cause the vehicle to catch fire, causing occupants to suffer serious injuries or death as they are burned alive. While the man in this case is fortunate to be alive, he will likely face lifelong complications due to the amputated legs, brain damage, and broken bones.
