Most People Concerned About Self-Driving Vehicles

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are an average of 9.1 crashes in driverless vehicles per million vehicle miles driven, compared to an average of 4.2 crashes in conventional vehicles per million miles driven.

Also, a survey of 2,000 Americans conducted by OnePoll from January 9 to January 11, 2024, showed that more than 90% of Americans have concerns about these autonomous vehicles.

The survey revealed some interesting thoughts that Americans have about self-driving vehicles. They include:

• A whopping 93% of Americans have concerns about self-driving cars, especially with safety and technology.
• More than 80% of Americans have never been in a self-driving vehicle.
• More than half of consumers are unlikely to own or use a self-driving vehicle in the next five years.
• More than 60% of Americans wouldn’t trust a self-driving car with their loved ones.
• Fewer than 30% of consumers would pay a premium for a self-driving vehicle.
• Thirty percent of Americans are excited about self-driving vehicles in the future.

Americans lack trust in driverless vehicles. Just 12% of consumers are very trusting of this technology, while 46% are either very or somewhat untrusting.

Safety is the main concern among American consumers when it comes to driverless vehicles, with 36% indicating they do not trust the technology to keep people safe on the road. Technology malfunctions are also a concern, with more than 25% of consumers indicating they are most worried about malfunctions with the autopilot technology. Reliability, cost, hacking, and vehicle lifespan are other huge concerns.

There is a lot of skepticism regarding these vehicles. However, many people see benefits such as enhanced mobility for the elderly and people with disabilities, as well as increased efficiency in transportation logistics.
