Planning Road Trips Safely

RoadTripPlanning

Tis the season for not only holidays but also road trips. Many of us have family members who live hours away or possibly in other states. Millions of Americans pack up the car and brave the icy roads and crowds to celebrate with loved ones.

Road trips can be fun for those who have been cooped up in the house due to cold temperatures. However, if you’re not prepared, an hours-long trip in the car can be very stressful.

Ice, snow, heavy rain, road rage, car accidents, and road closures can put a damper on a road trip. Here’s what you need to know so you can be prepared for whatever comes your way.

Know the Weather Conditions

Yes, you may know the 10-day weather forecast for where you live, but what’s it going to be like at your destination? Check weather apps and websites and get an idea of what to expect. Are you heading down to sunny Florida or up to snowy Maine? There can be a huge difference in temperatures and weather conditions within a state, so you’ll need to know whether or not you’ll need to pick up tire chains.

Pack Accordingly

Make sure you have plenty of warm clothing to keep you comfortable as temperatures dip. While you should bring coats, boots, scarves, gloves, and hats you don’t have to wear all this winter gear while driving. In fact, it could be dangerous, as it makes you bulky and can restrict movement.

Bring an Emergency Kit

You could possibly be stuck in your car in bad weather. Your car should have a proper car emergency kit that includes items like a first aid kit, ice scraper with brush, basic tools (screwdrivers, pliers, wrench), warning flares, and an emergency blanket. Don’t forget to bring snacks and water for yourself and any pets.

 Check Your Tires

Don’t skimp on your tires, as they are the only thing separating your vehicle from the road. Tires with poor tread will not perform well in ice or snow. If it’s time for new tires, consider snow tires or at least all-season tires if snow will be light. Also, make sure all tires have enough pressure. Tire pressure tends to decrease as temperatures cool down, so make sure all four are properly inflated.

Check Your Lights

Winter means shorter days, so you’ll likely be spending a lot of time driving in the dark. Be prepared by making sure all important lights are working so that you can see and be seen by others. Check your headlights, brake lights, taillights, turn signals, and emergency flashers to ensure all working. If not, replace any burnt-out bulbs.

Contact a Personal Injury Lawyer

Road trips can be fun, but you need to plan ahead. There are a lot of vehicles on the roadways during the holiday season, which makes accidents more likely to happen.

A Houston car accident attorney from The West Law Office, PLLC can guide you through the process of recovering compensation in a crash. The holidays are stressful enough. Let us help you move on with less stress. Schedule a consultation today by calling 281-347-3247 or filling out the online form.
