Semi Trucks and Jackknifing

Jackknife

Truck accidents can happen in a number of ways and result in a number of outcomes.

One of the most common types of truck accidents involves a jackknife. Trucks jackknife when the front vehicle skids but the trailer attached to the truck does not stop. This causes the trailer to push the front of the vehicle, or the cab, to one side. The momentum and heavy weight of the trailer causes it to swing out of alignment with the cab, forming an acute angle resembling a folding pocket knife.

Semi trucks are extremely large vehicles, so as you can imagine, a jackknife is a dangerous situation that can cause accidents and block roadways. Jackknifing trucks lead to countless accidents, injuries, and deaths each year. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, there were 169 fatal crashes involving jackknifed trucks in 2020.

 What Causes a Jackknife?

Several factors can lead to a jackknife such as the following:

  • Hard braking. Sudden braking, especially on slippery surfaces, can cause the wheels to lock. The trailer, which has its own momentum, continues to move, causing the cab and trailer to pivot. To avoid this, use anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and avoid sudden braking by maintaining a safe following distance.
  • Excessive speed. Taking curves or turns too quickly can destabilize the trailer, leading to a loss of control. Reduce speed before curves and drive according to road and weather conditions.
  • Poor road conditions. Ice, snow, rain, or gravel reduce traction, making it easier for the trailer to skid out of alignment. Drivers should go slower and adjust to the road conditions. Use chains or winter tires when necessary.
  • Improper loading. Uneven or improperly secured cargo can shift during travel, changing the trailer’s center of gravity and causing instability. Ensure cargo is evenly distributed and properly secured.
  • Equipment failure. Faulty brakes, worn tires, or other mechanical issues can reduce control and contribute to jackknifing. Perform regular maintenance and inspections on the truck and trailer.
  • Driver error. Overcorrection, abrupt maneuvers, or inexperience on behalf of the truck driver can lead to situations where the trailer swings out. Drivers should be properly trained and avoid overreacting in challenging situations.
  • Downhill braking. Continuous braking on a steep downhill can cause the brakes on a semi truck to overheat, reducing their effectiveness, and lead to a loss of control. Drivers can prevent this by using engine braking (lower gears) and avoiding riding the brakes on long descents.
