What is Whiplash?

Whiplash6

When you think of injuries caused by car accidents, whiplash is probably one of the first ones that comes to mind. But what is it exactly?

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by the rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck. It is often caused by the impact of a rear-end accident, but can happen while playing sports as well. Whiplash can be minor and cause pain for just a few weeks. In some cases, though, it can be severe and even debilitating, causing lasting pain and mobility issues.

After a car crash, it is important to get compensation for whiplash and other injuries and damages you have suffered. Seek legal help right away.

Symptoms of Whiplash

Whiplash symptoms can occur right away or within a few days after the crash. Some common symptoms include the following:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Pain when moving the neck
  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull
  • Tenderness in the shoulder, upper back, or arms
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness

It is also possible for whiplash victims to suffer from the following:

  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Moodiness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Memory problems
  • Depression

Those who have experienced a high-speed injury, have had whiplash before, already experience back or neck pain, or are older will often face a worsened outcome.

Imaging Tests

A whiplash injury won’t show up on imaging tests, but tests can rule out other medical conditions. Common tests that your doctor may perform include:

  • X-rays. X-rays of the neck can show issues such as broken bones and arthritis.
  • CT scan. This type of X-ray can make detailed images of bone and show damage.
  • MRIs use radio waves and a magnetic field to make detailed 3D images. Besides bone injuries, MRI scans show some soft tissue injuries, such as damage to the spinal cord, disks, or ligaments.

Treatment for Whiplash

Whiplash can be treated with the following:

  • Pain relievers. Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen can help manage pain. For more severe pain, a doctor may prescribe prescription-strength medications.
  • Applying an ice pack for 15 to 20 minutes every few hours during the first week can help reduce swelling and inflammation.
  • After the initial icing period, applying moist heat for several days can help muscles relax and relieve pain. A warm shower can also be helpful.
  • Your doctor may prescribe stretching and movement exercises to help restore range of motion in your neck and back. These exercises can include rotating your neck, tilting your head, bending your neck, and rolling your shoulders.
  • Physical therapy. Physical therapy can help with ongoing pain and range-of-motion exercises.
